Specualtion surrounding link value has been on the mind of SEO professionals for a while now. One of the most influencial voices in SEO, John Mueller, recently speculated that links may begin to play a decreasing role in rankings, explaining: “over time, the weight on the links at some point will drop off a little bit as we can figure out a little bit better how the content fits in within the context of the whole web”. ‘Content is king’ seems to be the ongoing sentiment from Google with recent updates such as the helpful content update granting a greater emphasis on truly valuable content for rankings.
