LLM Visibility & Generative Search Optimisation

Be Visible where decisions are now being made

Search and exploration is changing. Your customers are no longer just using search engines to solve their problems instead they are asking questions directly to large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and Gemini and increasingly trusting the answers they get.

If your brand is not being referenced, cited, or recommended in those responses then you are invisible at a critical moment of influence.

LLM visibility, sometimes called Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) or AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation), is about ensuring your brand shows up credibly and consistently across tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI-powered search experiences. Lots see this as a bolt on or replacement to SEO, we see it as the next layer on top of it.

Why brand matters more than ever in LLMs

LLMs do not rank pages in the same way search engines do and instead synthesise answers based on signals of authority, relevance, consistency and trust.

Strong brands win because they:

  • Are referenced across credible third-party sources
  • Are talked about consistently in context, not just optimised on-page
  • Have a clear narrative around what they do and why they matter

And this is where many performance-led strategies fall short: the focus is on returns and not sustainable growth driven by building a brand.

Boutique has always sat at the intersection of brand, media, PR and performance, this has been our heritage since our inception.

We have spent years building authority, shaping narratives, and amplifying brands across channels that LLMs now rely on as training and reference sources. As we enter a new world GEO/AEO or whatever you want to call it brings that thinking into a new environment.

If you are not thinking about how you get featured then you’re already way behind many of your competitors.

Our approach to LLM visibility

We do not treat GEO as a technical task or a checklist and instead treat it as an authority-building problem.

Our approach typically covers:

1. LLM visibility audit

We assess how visible your brand currently is across major LLMs and AI-led search tools, including:

  • Where and how your brand is referenced
  • Which competitors are being cited instead
  • What themes, categories and questions you are missing from

By having this data it gives us a clear baseline and a prioritised gap analysis.

2. Authority & citation signals

We analyse the signals LLMs are most likely to trust, including:

  • Backlink quality and publisher relevance
  • PR coverage, authorship and brand mentions
  • Depth of content

This is not about volume, brands are built on credibility.

3. Brand narrative alignment

LLMs reward clarity so we look at how consistently your brand story shows up across:

  • Owned content
  • Earned media
  • Expert commentary and thought leadership

4. Integrated activation

GEO does not live in isolation. We activate through:

  • PR and digital PR
  • Content and SEO
  • Media and partnerships

We’re an integrated agency, no one service can solve the LLM challenge and so we activate with the goal of increasing meaningful, citable presence rather than surface-level visibility.

Why Boutique

Many agencies are approaching GEO from a single angle for example pure SEO agencies focus on markup and keywords, pure PR agencies focus on coverage volume.

We have always worked across brand and performance, grounded in media, PR and data and this is exactly the balance  LLM visibility demands.

We understand:

  • How authority is built over time
  • How media ecosystems shape perception
  • How performance data validates what works

This makes us well placed to help brands not just appear in LLMs, but appear credibly.

FAQs

LLM visibility refers to how often and how accurately your brand appears in responses generated by large language models such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. This includes brand mentions, citations, recommendations and contextual references.

This is an on-going debate, but our stance is that it is not the same as SEO. GEO builds on SEO but goes beyond it, where traditional SEO focuses on ranking pages, LLM visibility focuses on being referenced as a trusted source within generated answers. Some tactics do converge but there are nuances

They do not use backlinks in the same way Google does, but high-quality links, brand mentions and authoritative coverage strongly influence the sources LLMs draw from.

It is increasingly difficult as LLMs favour brands with clear positioning, third-party validation and consistent presence, whereas performance activity alone rarely delivers that. However, performance should be activated with a brand lens so we’re happy to have a chat if you want to discuss this more.
