THE BIGGER THEY ARE: GOOGLE’S AD REVENUE SET TO DROP 5%

Google is set to see an unprecedented drop in ad revenue in 2020 (5%) as the Covid impact hits hard. With Covid-19 the major factor behind it with big losses from the travel industry and many ecommerce businesses, there’s also more than meets the eye. Amazon have started to pull their search ads off Google, and this coincides with both Facebook and Amazon seeing uplifts in their ad spend, as businesses take that budget away from Google. We’ve seen some interesting upgrades on Bing in June – not only did Bing Ads get a facelift to make it a little easier on the eye with improved usability, new features in Webmaster Tools are going down well with the SEO community. FACEBOOK STAKES A STAND: ANTI HATE SPEECH CAMPAIGN GOES LIVE

The #StopHateforProfit campaign has over 400 advertisers pausing their Facebook ad spend from the 1st of July, as a backlash to its policies regarding hate speech – in particular its decision to leave threatening comments from US president Donald Trump (Twitter placed a warning on the same message. Nick Clegg (yes that Nick Clegg, now Facebook VP of Global Affairs and Communications) has published a memo outlining what Facebook is doing to address hate speech. Read more on this here.

STRONG CONNECTIONS: LINKEDIN EXPAND ANALYTICS AND ADD NEW TOOLS FOR JOB SEEKERS

You can now see who follows you by individual followers, sorted in reverse chronological order. This allows us to engage more directly with followers, thank them for following and loads of other cool stuff. You can read more here

 They’ve also added “badges” where job seekers can easily make it known to just recruiters or to everyone if they are searching for work. This new initiative is designed to help with the mass unemployment we’re seeing due to Covid19, learn more about it here

EDGE TO EDGE: INSTAGRAM TEST FULL SCREEN STORIES DISPLAY

Previously looking at a double row of stories, Instagram is now testing a full page dedicated to stories. Story use is on the rise, and Instagram is looking to fend off competition from TikTok.  Could this be the way to combat the new kid on the block? Read more about it here
