Latest Rajar makes good reading all round

The latest Rajar results out today (12th May 2011) make for positive reading all round.

The head figure shows that listening has reached a new high with 91.6% of the UK population tuning in on a weekly basis.

There was even positive news for digital radio as it saw growth of 11.2% yr on yr and now reaches 22.3m adults, accounting for over a quarter of all listening. Ford Emmals, Chief Executive of Digital Radio UK was obviously delighted with the growth and added ‘…what is more encouraging is how listeners are responding positively to the BBC and commercial radio digital only stations’. This increase in listening hours and reach on digital only stations is a positive sign and may encourage both the BBC and commercial radio to invest further.

Whilst there was good news all round First Radio will no doubt screams from the roof tops about their growth of listening hours that now tops Capital Radio Network. However Capital are celebrating taking back the top spot in London and have encouragingly seen growth in those regional stations rebranded from Galaxy to Capital. Both Yorkshire and the North East saw double digit growth whilst Scotland and the North West saw small increases.

TalkSPORT continue with the accolades only days after winning the Sony Award for best radio station they have once again seen significant growth in reach and hours and can now hit over 3.2m listeners every week.

Both 6 Music and ! Xtra the 2 BBC stations in fear of being cut saw significant increases reaching 1.3m and 900,000 listeners each week respectively with 26% and 34% yr on yr growth.

Finally, it was nice to Radio Aire jump in their reach after significant investment in their content. The ‘JK and Joel breakfast show’ giving Capitals ‘Hirsty’s Daily Dose’ a run for their money.
